Abby Sher Meets “Erasing the Distance”
Feb 27th, 2010 by John Lavere
Today I had the privilege to photograph a special and entertaining event. My friend Brighid invited me to Flourish on Lincoln in Chicago to see Abby Sher and some of her fellow Second City performers improvise topics from her book Amen Amen Amen. Abby’s book addresses her experience with eating disorders and obsessive compulsive disorder. While the topic is quite serious, Abby does the great service of bringing these topics to our attention with humor and grace. It was nothing short of inspirational to see her courageously sharing her story.
Brighid has been instrumental in helping a lot of people find the support and services they need to manage and treat mental illness. Her organization, Erasing the Distance, does theatrical performances designed to bring awareness to mental health issues. Not only do they raise awareness, but they network with mental health professionals to bring services and support to the people they reach through performance. She has taken on a unique mission that deserves all our support.
I’d also like to mention and thank Lina Khalil of Fetch PR for helping to get the word out for Erasing the Distance. A little effort by a group of talented professionals can get great things done:-)
